Shining Souls (Trust) is a registered non-profit organization deeply committed to empowering India's youth. We believe a brighter future for our nation depends on adolescents who are mentally, physically, and socially equipped to thrive.
However, Indian adolescents face a critical juncture, encountering a confluence of challenges impacting their well-being and jeopardizing their potential. We must act now to equip them with the knowledge, skills, and support systems necessary for healthy development and responsible decision-making.
A staggering 7.3% of Indian adolescents (13-17) experience mental health issues, including anxiety and depression (National Mental Health Survey of India, 2015-16). Globally, 1 in 7 adolescents face a diagnosed mental disorder (UNICEF). Recent research by NCERT (2022) reveals alarming levels of academic anxiety, mood swings, and difficulty concentrating among Indian students.
The lack of adequate support systems in schools and access to professional help further exacerbates this crisis.
Substance abuse among adolescents, especially in urban areas, is a growing threat. While comprehensive data is lacking, anecdotal evidence and news reports paint a concerning picture of increased experimentation with alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. Adolescents, vulnerable due to peer pressure and a desire for acceptance, often turn to substances as a coping mechanism for underlying mental health issues.
Comprehensive sex education is often absent or inadequate in Indian schools. The result is dangerously low awareness about safe sex practices, consent, and STI prevention.
NFHS data shows that only 10% of teenage girls and 15% of teenage boys are aware of safe sex. Deep seated cultural taboos further hinder open communication about sexual health.
Project “SHINE” offers a comprehensive, multi-dimensional solution to address the urgent and interconnected challenges facing adolescents in India:
The “SHINE” Resilience Curriculum: Equipping adolescents with essential life skills through engaging online modules and offline workshops. This interactive and culturally sensitive curriculum covers mental well-being, stress management, healthy relationships, consent, substance abuse prevention, and recognizing warning signs.
“SHINE” Support Networks: Establishing a robust online and offline support system to ensure adolescents, teachers, and parents have access to trained professionals, peer support groups, educational resources, and confidential counselling services. This network will provide early identification and intervention, acting as a vital safety net.
“SHINE” Empowerment Platform: Developing a user-friendly digital platform (website and mobile app) to provide adolescents with easy access to information, self-assessment tools, interactive forums, and a directory of support services across India. A dedicated Creative Expression Hub will empower adolescents to explore these issues through creative arts and storytelling.
By leveraging technology, partnering with schools and communities, and building local capacity, Project “SHINE” will:
Increase awareness and knowledge of mental health, substance abuse, and sexual health.
Improve life skills and resilience, empowering adolescents to make informed choices and resist negative influences.
Reduce stigma and increase help-seeking behaviour, creating a more open and accepting environment.
Enhance access to support services, bridging gaps in service provision, particularly in underserved areas.
Empower communities to actively promote adolescent well-being, fostering a sense of collective responsibility and driving sustainable change.
